Invisalign® uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually straighten your teeth without fixed braces.

At Optima Dental Care, the difference is in how that movement is planned. The aim isn’t just to align your teeth, but to make sure the result feels right when you bite, chew, and speak, and that makes you smile for years to come.

A few reasons people choose Invisalign®:

  • Teeth that feel more balanced and easier to live with day to day.
  • Clear aligners that most people won’t notice.
  • A practical way to improve crowding, gaps, or bite issues.
  • Fewer disruptions to your routine compared to fixed braces.
  • Treatment that’s planned digitally, so you can see where you’re heading.

What Invisalign® actually is

Invisalign is a clear aligner system used to straighten teeth in a gradual, controlled way. Each aligner is slightly different from the last, guiding your teeth into position step by step. Most patients wear them for 1–2 weeks at a time before moving to the next set.

Because everything is digitally planned, we can map out the movement in advance and show you how your teeth are likely to change over the course of treatment.

Seeing the result before you start

As part of the planning process, we take a 3D digital scan of your teeth. This allows us to:

  • Build a detailed treatment plan.
  • Show you a simulation of how your teeth could look.
  • Give you a realistic idea of what’s achievable.

It’s a useful way to understand the outcome before committing to treatment.

How it fits into your day

Invisalign® is designed to work around your routine. You remove the aligners to eat and brush your teeth, then wear them for the rest of the day. There’s usually a short adjustment period at the start, but most patients find that it becomes second nature fairly quickly.

Invisalign® and dental implants

In some cases, Invisalign is used as part of a wider treatment plan. For example:

  • Aligning teeth before placing a dental implant.
  • Creating or improving space where a tooth is missing.
  • Helping achieve a more balanced result overall.

This kind of staged approach often leads to a more predictable and natural outcome.

A clear starting point

If you’re considering Invisalign®, the first step is simply understanding what’s achievable. We offer private examinations from £30, which may include X-rays where clinically needed, so you can make a decision based on a clear, realistic plan.

What can Invisalign® fix?

Crowded teeth

Crowded teeth is a condition where you do not have enough room for your teeth to fit normally. This can cause plaque or tartar and other harmful bacteria to build up as it is harder for you to brush and floss well.

Gaps between teeth

Gaps between teeth is when there is extra space between two or more of your teeth. This can cause pockets between your teeth and gums and can cause food to get stuck making them tender and sore. This might also lead to gum disease.

Open bite

An Open bite is when your upper and lower teeth don't touch when you close your mouth. An open bite can make it hard for you to chew or difficult to bite even the most common of food like apples.

Underbite

An underbite is when you close your mouth and your lower front teeth are in front of your upper teeth. In many cases, this is actually a problem with your lower jaw being too far forward. An underbite can make it hard to chew properly and speak clearly, and it might cause your teeth to wear down more quickly.

Overbite

An overbite is when your upper front teeth overlap with your lower front teeth. Most people have at least a little overbite. When your overbite is too large, your doctor might tell you you have a deep bite. This can cause problems, from your teeth wearing down to pain in your jaw.

Crossbite

A crossbite is when you close your mouth and yet some of your upper teeth are sitting inside your lower teeth rather than on the outside. A crossbite can make your teeth wear down or chip. It can also make your gums start to recede or make little notches above your gum line. This kind of damage can lead to painful gum problems or even bone loss.

Frequently asked questions

1. How long will my Invisalign® treatment take? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

It depends on what needs to be corrected. Some cases are relatively short, while others take longer. Most fall somewhere between 6–18 months. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe once we’ve assessed your teeth properly.

2. Is Invisalign® the right option for me? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

In many cases, yes — particularly for mild to moderate crowding, gaps, or teeth that have shifted over time. For more complex cases, other types of orthodontics may be more suitable. We’ll talk you through this honestly at your consultation.

3. Is Invisalign® better than braces? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

They’re different. Invisalign is more discreet and removable, which suits a lot of adult patients. Fixed braces can sometimes offer more control in complex cases. The right option depends on what you’re trying to achieve.

4. How noticeable are the aligners? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

They’re clear and designed to be discreet. Most people won’t notice them unless they’re looking closely.

5. Will Invisalign® affect how I speak? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

You might notice a slight change at first, particularly with certain sounds, but this usually settles within a few days as you get used to wearing them.

6. How many hours a day do I need to wear them? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

Ideally, around 20–22 hours a day. The more consistent you are, the smoother the treatment tends to go.

7. Are the aligners uncomfortable? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

You may feel some pressure when switching to a new aligner, which is a sign the teeth are moving. It’s usually mild and short-lived.

8. What are Invisalign® attachments? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

Attachments are small, tooth-coloured shapes placed on certain teeth to help guide movement more precisely. They’re subtle and usually not very noticeable.

9. What happens if I lose an aligner? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

Let us know as soon as possible. In some cases, you can move to the next aligner or wear the previous one temporarily — we’ll guide you on the best approach.

10. Do I need to wear retainers afterwards? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

Yes. Once your teeth have moved, retainers are used to keep them in position. Without them, teeth can gradually shift back over time.

11. How long do I need to wear retainers for? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

Initially, they’re worn more regularly, then usually at night long-term. We’ll give you clear guidance based on your case.

12. Can I get Invisalign® on the NHS? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

Invisalign® is typically provided as a private treatment. We can talk you through costs and options at your consultation.

13. Is Invisalign® worth it? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

For many patients, yes, particularly if small changes would make a noticeable difference day to day. The key is making sure it’s the right treatment for your situation.

14. Can Invisalign® be combined with other treatments? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

Yes. It’s often used alongside treatments like composite bonding, teeth whitening, or even dental implants to achieve a more complete result.

15. Is Invisalign® the right option? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

Invisalign® works well for many patients, but not all.

At your consultation, we’ll look at:

  • What you’d like to change.
How your teeth are currently positioned.
    How is your bite functioning?

If Invisalign® is a good fit, we’ll show you what’s possible. If not, we’ll talk you through other options.
