When a tooth needs a crown, how it feels day to day matters just as much as how it looks

A well-made crown should sit comfortably in your bite, allowing you to eat and speak without noticing it’s there. Poorly fitted crowns can feel slightly “off”, leading to discomfort or uneven wear over time.

At Optima Dental Care in Maidenhead, crown treatment is led by Dr Mohan Chawla, with a focus on careful shaping, precise adjustment, and long-term function, so the result feels stable, natural, and built to last.

What is a dental crown?

A crown is essentially a way of rebuilding a tooth when there isn’t enough of it left to rely on.

Rather than placing another filling, which may not last, the tooth is covered and supported so it can function normally again. The aim is to keep the tooth stable and comfortable over time, rather than letting it gradually break down further.

What to expect from treatment

Crown treatment is usually carried out over two visits.

At the first appointment, the tooth is prepared and shaped so the crown can fit properly. Impressions are then taken, which are used to make a crown that matches your bite and surrounding teeth. A temporary is often placed in the meantime, so the tooth is protected.

At the second visit, the final crown is fitted and adjusted. This part is more important than it might seem; small changes to the shape can make a noticeable difference to how it feels when you bite and chew.

Optima Dental Care

A longer-term way of managing the tooth

Crowns are often used to stabilise a situation rather than just fix a problem.

Once a tooth has reached the point where it needs this level of support, the aim is to keep it working reliably for as long as possible.

With regular maintenance and good oral hygiene, crowns can last many years — but how they are planned and fitted at the start plays a big part in that.

Optima Dental Care

A clear starting point

If a tooth has been bothering you, or you’ve been told you may need a crown, it’s worth having it looked at sooner rather than later.

We offer private examinations from £30, which may include X-rays where clinically needed. That gives you a clear picture of what’s going on and whether a crown (or something simpler) would be enough.

Treatment testimonials

Mrs Angela Haigh

"I want to say what a pleasure it is to visit the team. My dentist Dr Chawla is he best.

Jennifer Trillow, Maidenhead

"Optima has been my dentist for over 10 years. Always pleased with the treatment from both NHS and private. My dentist (Aparna) is lovely and always gives good advice, and I’m completely at ease with her. The staff are warm and welcoming. I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else for treatment!

Elaine Lewis

"My family and I have been attending the Optima Dental Practice for about 15 years. We have always found everyone who works there very caring, friendly and above all, professional. We always feel we can trust and rely on the treatment we receive there.

K J Syms

"As one of the many people that hated going to the dentist, all that changed after I discovered Optima Dental Care. In fact, I look forward to my visit to see the dentist. They are very professional and kind. I have known Dr Mohan Chawla for over 10 years and hope to go on for many more.

Jo Dimmock

"Dear Mohan I would like it known how happy I am with all treatments received. Yourself, and all the staff are amazing and as a fairly nervous patient I’m always made to feel at ease, and everything is explained thoroughly and the standard of care is second to none for myself and my son. The surgery is extremely clean and welcoming. 100% highly recommended.

Paul Vincent

"Wanted to say thank you for the care I received throughout the process of having my implant completed. I was talked through the process in detail before starting. At each stage I felt comfortable that I knew what was happening. The end result is exactly what I was promised. Thank you.

Hazel, Ashtead

"I am very happy with all the dental work that Dr Mohan Chawla has carried out for me since I became a patient at his practice nine years ago. Then last year, 2018, he performed what I call ‘a little magic dentistry on three of my truly ugly, filled front teeth, turning them into splendidly normal-looking teeth. Making smiling a joy for the first time in decades.

Ken Hudson, Epsom

"Dear Dr Chawla, I thank you for your reminder about dental appointments, but I doubt if I shall be requiring one for a few years yet to come! The new set of dentures fit perfectly with no sores, ulcers or the like to date, and for which I must compliment your workmanship and recommend to others. Wishing you every success in the future.

David Burrows

"Many thanks to Dr Chawla and his team for the treatment I received during my implant process. It was lengthy and not always pleasant – invasive surgery, bone graft, temporary plate etc. – but they always made me feel that the outcome would be worthwhile – and it was! I still feel reasonably relaxed about visiting my dentist.

Deeque, Shepperton

"3 years on, and I am forever grateful to Mohan. When no one else could offer a solution for my lateral incisor, which had broken off close to the gum, for a new crown, and my bone was very limited for an implant. He engineered a solution to have a new crown. To get rid of that awful plate was such a relief and in many ways life-changing!

Frequently asked questions

Who are dental crowns best suited for? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

Crowns tend to be recommended when a tooth is starting to struggle. That might be:

  • After a large filling has weakened, it.
  • Where a tooth has cracked or worn down.
  • Or following root canal treatment, where the tooth can become more brittle.

At that stage, it’s less about repairing small areas and more about supporting the tooth as a whole.

We look at how the tooth is behaving in your bite, not just how it looks, before deciding if a crown is the right option.

How long do dental crowns last? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

They can last many years, particularly when the bite is well balanced, and the surrounding teeth and gums are kept healthy.

Will it feel like my own tooth? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

That’s the aim. It may feel slightly different at first, but once adjusted properly, it should settle and feel natural.

Is the treatment uncomfortable? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

It’s usually very manageable. Local anaesthetic is used, and most patients are surprised by how straightforward it feels.

Why not just have another filling? down black circle arrow right black circle arrow

In some cases, a filling isn’t strong enough to support the tooth long term. A crown spreads the load more evenly and reduces the risk of further damage.
